The lore never says that Pugna actually died; it were just the zealots that believed their old grandmaster had reincarnated as Pugna. On top of that, the actual death of the previous grandmaster is left ambiguous. Heck, the way it is said ('The Grandmaster of the temple compound had himself passed into Oblivion') seems to suggest it was suicide. Since Pugna's lore says that his realm lies near the vents of the Nether Reaches, I very much doubt that Pugna has been living on the surface of the Dota 2 world itself; which is where Viper got summoned to.
I also checked the voicelines for Viper; he has no rival voicelines, nor any voicelines for when he sees Pugna. So in which one of the voice files does he recognize Pugna? One of Pugna's voicelines, on the other hand, is "What was it, Viper? Nether Reaches lost their charm?", which to me, suggests even more that Viper was Pugna's pet in the Nether Reaches, not on the surface.
When I see all of this, I am fairly certain it went like this:
Pugna becomes the new grandmaster, grows up, turns Viper into his pet, Viper gets summoned to the surface by a wizard (not Pugna), he attacks (and possibly kills) the wizard and escapes.

Nah. The voice files have Viper and Pugna speaking to each other that basically says Pugna was his master. And Pugna is a wizard who lived NEAR the Nether Reaches, not inside it. Besides, it fits in with Pugna's lore which said he died (and later came back to life). So if Viper can recognize Pugna, it must mean that he knew what he looked like before he died (since he was the one who killed him previously).

Pugna and Viper both are from the Nether Reaches. It sounds more like Viper was Pugna's pet while he was in the Nether Reaches before being pulled out by a wizard.

Viper's previous master was Pugna, who died but came back to life. At least, going by the voice files.

But, honestly, I feel as if that line is more of a referral to some previous battle he was engaged in before whatever match you did.

It is possible he killed the one that summoned him, although his lore only states that his master was hit in the eyes with Viper's acids. It doesn't specifically states that he was killed. Still a possibility though.

started a topic Viper kills... again?

    Viper kills... again?

It's kinda odd to hear Viper say "Viper kills again!" when the kill I made was the first in the match, and I hadn't done any last hits or denies either. Whom has he killed before?
