  • [Suggestion] Ping sound quieter the farther the hero is from it.

It really annoys and confuses me when I'm on a lane, let's say bottom lane, and I hear a ping, or several pings, and I go full alert and check the map only to see that my teammates that are on top are pinging to themselves. So it basically doesn't even involve me at all: yet I have no idea where the ping came from and must check the map every single time I hear a ping. This problem would be resolved if the pinging sound would get quieter the farther my hero is from it, or something like that, dunno, different sounds for top, mid and bottom area? I dunno. Doesn't matter how Valve would do it, I'd just like to know where the ping is coming from just by hearing it.

Is it really so bad to look at the map for like a split second?

It should stay as it is, because those far away pings can also involve you and that happens quite often.

I also think it should stay as it is. I often carry a tp scroll and if I see a ping I quickcheck the situation and maybe TP in if it is worthy.

It is not really hard to look at the minimap. (You should get used to it btw. You will get a feeling when you see some heroes are missing and it is awfully quite in your lane.)

But what's the problem with this solution? You still will hear the ping. And no, in the early game, pings from the other side of the map will not involve you, ever. Later in the game I don't mind the pings, because yes, every ping is singnificant then.

But look at it like this: you go on a lane with your teammate, you do what you do and you hear a ping. My first thought: maybe my teammate is pinging, better to check: it's only top/bottom pinging to themselves. That's the main reason why I want this feature: I want to know immediately who is pinging, because it interrupts my flow.

This is not true. There are even cases where you should tp on lvl 1 to that lane. Maybe not that common, but it happens.

I never encounter people who are constantly pinging themselves, neither in my games, nor in any game I watch. It's more common to see people spam ping on you to blame you for their deaths and stuff like that.

Toning down the ping sound could make people miss the sound, because low sounds tend to get overtoned by other sounds in the game.

Pinging to let your teammate know that you want to attack right now or something like that isn't common?

You said constantly pinging themselves. That's something different.
And even that, it's not that common. Not spam form. Or at least not in any game I played or saw.

Read again, I wrote: "it's only top/bottom pinging to themselves."

And you miss the point completely. Where the hell did I mention anything about spamming? Nowhere. I'm talking about normal pinging. Stop adding things I didn't even mention, why so many people do that.

Where is the problem when it's not spamming? This makes no sense. Would you also suggest every spell with global sound to play only local sounds? They are heard just as much as pings.

And as I said before, toning it down might make the sound get lost between all the other sounds, which is bad.

Then don't be a moderator if you can't understand what you are reading. Please. For god's sake. I already explained why it bugs me. Read it and maybe you will finally understand and your responses will be actually relevant, because so far, you were responding to things I didn't even say and weren't a problem for me. Please, just read again, that frickin part: "But look at it like this: you go on a lane with your teammate, you do what you do and you hear a ping. My first thought: maybe my teammate is pinging, better to check: it's only top/bottom pinging to themselves. That's the main reason why I want this feature: I want to know immediately who is pinging, because it interrupts my flow."

Mind you: NOTHING about spamming, just normal pinging.

I agree on the toning part, probably wouldn't be a very good solution. I'm just continuing this dispute with you to make things perfectly clear, as why I want this.

Yes I read what you wrote. I still don't get how that is a problem. "Interrupting your flow" really?

And be honest, if you have that attitude "want to know immediatly who is pinging, even if the sound would be lower on other lanes, it still would make you check every time who pinged.

And it's not my reading ability. It's just how you interpret it.

"pinging severaly" could mean spam pinging.
"pinging to themselves" could mean they ping on themself for whatever reasons.

Combined with the fact that you said that it annoys you, I just could think they you are referring to people spamming pings, because I just don't see how it is any annoying.
When you are on this forum for a longer time, then you'd understand that it can happen that things get wrong interpreted.

And you are also fully ignoring my argument I made why a more silent ping would be bad.
