  • Spectate in real time

I'm sure a lot of people can relate to this. Sometimes I watch my friends play, but it's two minutes behind. It diminishes the spectating experience, because you can share the triumphs with your friends as they are talking about it, you have to wait two minutes.

I wish you could spectate in real time. This isn't a huge game ruining feature if you limit vision to one side (whatever team your friend is on).

I kill a lot of time in spectator mode while waiting to play games with my friends. Anything that makes people spend more time in Dota2 is better for the community. It would definitely be more entertaining to spend WITH my friends, than lagging behind. It would be easy to just treat this new spectator to only see one side of the team.
Also, this idea encourages mentoring. Being able to have a mentor train directly with a newbie, would help so much. Lowering the barrier for entry as long as you have friends with you.

I encourage debates about how it can be abused. Nobody wants to think that they are being ghosted.

    ------------------------------
Here are some common arguements against it.
    • Having friends on both teams

This is an incredibly strange scenario, but if you do have friends on both teams, then it just means you're ghosting for one and not the other. I guess who cares? This might happen in less that .1% of games taking place. Which is less than games ruined by abandons
    • Viewing a strangers profile to spectate

This is pretty easy to fix, by only enabling spectate in real time with people on your friends list only.

I disagree. I've spent a lot of time in college just watching my friends play games. And vice versa.
I think if you dont want your friends to 'mentor' you, then you should tell them so. The way spectating is right now, is really good. Their are a lot of cool features. But it could be a lot better. I'd definitely give up these features to be able to talk with my friends during a match. Everytime something cool happens in game, you only respond two minutes later. The excitement of that experience is already over. Its like watching the superbowl a month after it's happened. Surely everybody can agree here...

I feel very strongly that your views towards spectating are in the extreme minority

        that would be cheating...

maybe make the camera locked to the one of the person you're spectating. and the players should be able to reject your spectate-request, because what if you see 2 friends playing against each other? you could spectate one and talk with the other one.

This is addressed in my original post. But your solution is interesting as well.

As someone who watches friends play a lot while waiting for them, I would love to be able to watch them in real time. I'm pretty sure HON had it and it worked so you could only see what your friend could see. It would be locked to his/her player perspective, camera movement etc. and your friend would have to give you permission watch in real time. This is a feature I would love to see implemented.

If and only if the camera is locked towards your friends and the view you get is only one sided (you cant see everything thats going on in the map including enemy wards, runes, roshan). if its just the current spectating mode -the delay then its easily abusable.

YES!! Permission settings! Easiest solution. Not exploitable! Sometimes you dont want to play with your friends, but you still want to hang out and talk to them about current events... Not 2 minutes behind events...
