  • Cannot watch live games while someone on the same IP Address plays it.

I wanted to watch my roommate play today, we use the same router (Belkin N+) through Comcast. When I would join his games as a spectator he - the player - would immediately crash. We tried this two times, 1 as soon as they started picking characters, the second time I let the game go for a few minutes to be sure they were out of character selection and pre game. Both times the moment I clicked join and started loading he would crash. The second time I immediately ctrl-alt-deleted, and he was still unable to reconnect.

If you were trying to spectate a game with your roommate are you telling me you wouldn't be cheating? You would be able to see the whole map. Why not just look over his shoulder?

Out of curiousity, what happens if you try to play a game on the same team?

I came back to edit the team thing in. It works just fine playing together, with other friends, or just the two of us; against people or bots.

If this is intended for anti-ghosting then I will stop my ruckus. I assumed it was the same way with streams, the 2 minute delay is their to make the practice acceptable. Cheaters could always just use a different network anyways (like my neighbors). I just wanted to watch him play, but if there are bigger issues at stake or a statement on this somewhere, I could not seem to find the resources.

I have no idea if it was allowed or not, just a theory.

This is not a cheat, for the simple reason because it is set to 2 minutes late, so players will be unable to know where someone is or whether a ward. Probably not even a nice set servers to recognize two computers on the same IP address. When connecting to a server, it records an IP address that is already in the game, therefore, the same IP address will be unable to be in the spectator, so the server gets confused and there is a crash. : /

Thank you guys for taking the time to respond.

Things just got a bit weirder. We have separate steam accounts. We have played many games together before dota2 and not had any issues, many of them valve games. We can play TF2 together in valve servers. We can play Dota2 together. However just now I was playing tf2 in a valve server, when he got on dota I was booted. If I got back on the TF2 server while he was playing Dota2 and it booted him from the match.

Seems like maybe its not just a replay problem anymore - I'll snoop around the tech support forum.

Its you who got network problems, often this is caused by Trafic-shaping in the router.

The same research last night kinda led me to think this as well. Its weird because the only instances of this happening is around dota2. (Our third roommate has no problems playing SW:ToR independent of these issues, and these issues proceed regardless of him being on SW:ToR). Maybe this thread would be better off in tech support if mod wants to move this (or even delete it).

I will look through steam support and my routers support and edit in any results. I can't be the only person out there who will come across this issue.

This happens to my brother and I. Our computers connect to the same router, an ASUS RT-N53. I am on the N signal he uses G.

I will join his game to spectate, and he will disconnect from the game he is in. Resulting in an inability for him to reconnect to the match. If the match has not started yet (character select screen or before) it will just cause the game to crash.

If you haven't changed the ports the game uses to connect that would be the problem. To change the ports right click Dota 2 in steam library, click properties, set launch options and add +clientport 27016.

Only do this on one of your computers.
