    Just a random idea I had, but many of the most viewed live games are the most viewed because they feature either specific heroes that people are interested in, or specific players that people are interested in. This means there are bound to be a good number of people watching that hero/player's perspective cam. Could the number of people viewing this perspective be used in any way to help decide where the directed cam goes? It could look at a moving average of player perspective counts over every period of, say, 2 minutes (since that's where the normal delay is I guess) and highlight a specific player as "popular," so that if there's ever a close tie in who the directed cam wants to look at, it will follow the more popular person.

    It obviously shouldn't sway the decision too much since there are a large number of reasons people might watch a specific player at any given time, and this really only makes sense in games being spectated by a large number of people. Just an idea for a cam that still offers a holistic view of the match and the action, while still taking into account that certain players/heroes sometimes tend to be, on average, more interesting to watch than others are for reasons outside of current action in the game.

    Interesting idea, but I'd much rather chose my own favorite than rely on other viewers. Show me the cool fights and action, but go back to my chosen hero when nothing really happens.

    But then again, if I watch a game with a specific hero in mind, I'll most likely just want to go player perspective or simply free cam anyway.
