  • [Suggestion] In game Kill Cam like Call of Duty

So i've posted this in a couple threads about the live streams and watching replays, but i think it deserves its own thread.

Let me start by setting the scene by describing an example of some action in a game. Your playing Clockwork on the Radiant team, You've gone bot solo and you have a Furion jungling your side. Your lane has a Lina and a Sven on the dire side. The Dire have a Mirana soloing mid, and shes been mia for about 15 seconds. Suddenly you get hit by an arrow and are stunned for 5 seconds, followed up by a sven stun, and a lina stun, and a starfall, and you basically had no chance of survival. Now Mirana has first blood. Now we wait 5 seconds for Mirana to give her audio dialog about killing you. And my replay feature kicks in.

Here i have a few ideas about what can happen, and some people might not like how it sounds on paper, or argue its bad because it gives some people information they wouldn't have if they were focusing on their lane. But i think once people saw what i have in mind, they would get over those issues and actually really enjoy the feature.

So here goes... at this point i have 2 ideas.

    1) Everyone's game is "paused" while everyone sees the last 5-8 seconds of gameplay FROM MIRANAs perspective and it could even go slow motion for the last 2 seconds to see exactly what happened for the last hit. So we see her vision, see her mouse, see her aim the arrow and see her fire and watch clock get hit. Watch him die, and then the game resumes from where it was before the replay started.

This could really turn out well for showing some of the skill shots some players have and letting everyone see how pro they are. Everyone loves that idea right? Also it kinda rubs it in to the guy who died, because now everyone in the game sees how he got owned.

    2) The game does not pause for anyone, but just the player who died sees the same replay i described in option 1 while his respawn timer is counting down, this way no one's game gets interrupted, some people might not like having to watch a replay across the map when they are really trying to last hit or something in their lane. The player can then see where the person came from that killed them, could be really interesting to see what happens. Did they have an invis rune? did they smoke up? did pudge actually have vision of you when he hooked you? or was it just a blind guess into the fog that got lucky? All this would enrich the experience of the game i think. In this option the guy who is watching the instant replay can cancel with a simple left click anywhere on the play field the replay if he's too butt hurt to watch it, or in case he actually wants to buy back, or wants to watch the rest of the engagement of his team.

Now some important things to discuss for a feature like this. First off i think i remember hearing somewhere that Valve has some logic for tagging "Highlights" of the action. I remember something about it from the International. It could be really awesome for at the very end of the game, after someone's ancient goes down, you see the end game animation, and it would automatically go into the highlight reel. All the moments in the game that were worthy of noting. I believe they have logic for determining moments like first blood, double and triple kills, big team fights, genocides, and even great escapes (we all remember watching Morphling get away from a 5 man gank in the international by cloning an enemy, running the clone off in the other direction, wave forming into the trees, then swapping to the clone.)

Fifa does this at the end of every match as well, You see all the big plays, usually goals, and the stat screen doesn't pop-up with the menu until the user hits [A] or [X] on ps3.

    Feedback? Ideas? Discuss?

    1. would be very annoying, everytime a pause, i wouldnt play that kind of game.

    2. i think a killcam in dota is not realy necessary, the most thinks which kills u are visible, only few spells shot from fog.

in cod i like the killcam, but its a shooter, u see what weapon was used, where the killer camped or came from and how he aimed.

mb the 1. isnt that bad for replay, u could check a box →[x] slow motion highlights* or something like that, to enjoy the good scenes again.

i'm not opposed to the second option if it was optional. could be cool and if implemented right could also be a nice feature for spectators.

As an option for spectators, replay watchers, yes. Otherwise, no.

This. If they had a "kill cam" for players, then players would be able to get information out of the quick replay. For example, if someone was watching the kill cam and they saw that their opponents used their high cooldown spells, they could take advantage of that information. A kill cam would basically lower the skill ceiling.

              1. is not reasonable
              2. can be cool as an option. Maybe change the way the camera shows the kill (not the standard top/down)

Exactly. Another point: Some players have to control units also when they are dead (courier, illusion Warlock ultimate, etc.). You can't do that while watching a kill cam.

I don't want a killcam... It's just out of place in a game like this.

Having game "paused" for everyone is BAD IDEA. I'm laning on another lane, fighting anothre guy or just creeping, I don't care how the other guy died, nor I want to pause doing my stuff just to see some kind of replay of what happened on another lane. If you weren't following the bot lane, you don't deserve to know what skills other heroes used to kill which hero. Communicate with your team on this.

I don't think there is really a need for this. Besides it would look pretty for first few times, it would become annoying and you would just turn it off. You can already see in the log "what happened to you" and you were already part of the fight so you will know what happened. If you want to examine it further, you can open up a replay and do whatever you like with it.

I would like your idea to be added to DotaTV, for casting/spectating. The moments repeating would be nice for cases when there's simultaneous fights going on 2 (or more) different sides of the map, so you could rewatch the replays. It should, however, be controller by casters, since they should be able to stop/interrupt showing of replay in case there is something important going on while the replay is showing.

For simple gaming, I wouldn't mind rewatching the moments of the fights after the match has ended. It could even give you an options to replay the fights from different player angles/perspectives etc. (just doing some basic stuff on more important fights of the game. More stuff you could do by firing up a complete replay of the game and fiddling with it).
