Most likely for "big plays" that aren't really discernible from multi-kills, first bloods, allied-denies, and game winning events. There were a few of these big plays that people probably felt like it deserved an item drop.

While I agree with the sentiment, it's really hard to program a computer to recognize those sorts of stand-out events. Some of the biggest plays you can see in Dota, for example, don't involve any kills. Can the internal AI decide that a player got an "incredible escape?" Perhaps that's doable, but there are all sorts of little things that occur in games that are so much more subtle. Automating a system that understands truly incredible plays, some of which could be entirely unique in their own situations, could very well be impossible. Or maybe not.

Well im sure valve is watching the game, wouldn't be hard to assign mods for each game to hit a "give random item to X team pennat* when it happens (obv u could still miss some plays, but would get most of them)\

At least for the Ti2, afterwards would be hard as mentioned.
