There are too many variables and too much relevance between them. Item on one hero can be much more valuable than the same item on another hero. Item on one hero can be much more valuable in early game, than in late game and the exactly the opposite to another hero. Now add there are 5 teammates which can multiply the value of an item and 5 enemies that can decrease it with their items. Pushed towers can mean a lot in early game or nothing in late. Map awareness can be the most important thing for some lineups and for other not so important. Even if we rule out player skill, it's still complicated.

I like Dota exactly because it's complicated and you can argue for hours who has the upper hand.
And add to that the fact that some hero cann't carry before 5-6 item, but when they got those 5-6 item, they do carry as good as usual carry (venge/tiny come in top of my mind)

which makes the equation even more complicated.

+ some heroes, in hand of noob or "pro" don't have the same impact on the game at all.

for example sf vs viper, viper win in noob level, but don't even have a chance versus sf in highlevel etc...

I understand your point. I've read in a blog interview somewhere that Valve's struggles are 2 at the moment.
    1. Making the game friendly for new players. They have ideas to make a light version of dota for the newbies.
    2. Making the game more viewable, because with the TI2 they saw Dota can be exciting to watch, but they also understood it's pretty hard for non players to watch it and understand what is happening. Unlike in football or basketball where u can clearly see who is winning, in Dota right now you can't.

So they're working on this and good thing is it coincides with their business plans (to make money!) - to get Dota to the TV.

I completely agree the formula is complicated and even more so agree that DOTA as a game can never really be quantified into saying who is winning or losing but i feel that something like this if done properly could at least present a general idea for people that don't know as much about the game as someone who has been playing the game for years. Speaking as a comparatively new player Having some sort of reference when watching to know that even though say the dire has 6 towers taken does necessarily mean they are winning. Perhaps even just taking away the tallied total for who has the 'Advantage' a break down of points could help people understand at a glance who might be in the lead.

    [Suggestion] Live Team Advantage Scoreboard

I know Valve is working towards a way to make the Live games easier to understand for newer player and to do so I think they need some sort of 'Team Advantage System' to show which team has the lead in the match.

I was think that perhaps a way to do this would be to give everything an unseen points value (eg. Tier 1 tower could be worth 10 points). These points could then be tallied and the team with higher points could be shown in the Live match as the team with the 'Advantage'.

To make this work everything would need to have a value: Items, Towers, KD ratio, GPM, Roshan and so on. Combo points can be given for certain things like taking a full lane of towers or getting all Tier 1 towers thus allowing Map control to also play into the equation. These combo points could become even more complicated if possible from the balancing end of Valve (eg. Having a battle fury and manta style on a melee carry hero is worth more points than having them on just anyone).

I think this system if balanced properly could allow for a relatively good show of which team has the advantage in the match (not which team is winning). It would also be possible to break down the advantage into an easy to read list (eg. Dire has 30 points of items and 10 points for towers) thus allowing newer players to see clearly why one team might be in the lead.

Note: All values are just examples, I have no idea what would be the best values.

    Anyone have any thoughts?
