Spectator Mode should be 3 minutes delayed

  • Spectator Mode should be 3 minutes delayed

Spectator mode should be delayed 6 minutes because observer wards have a life of 6 minutes. Currently, spectator mode is delayed 2 minutes and obs. wards are up for 6 minutes. So if I were to tell my Ventrilo buddies that were playing a game (and I was spectating) I could tell them where an obs. ward was just placed by the enemy team and they could kill a ward that has 4 more minutes of life.

    Thoughts?

I totally agree with this. I had thought of this before but never posted it.

Observer wards have a 6 minute lifetime. Sentry Wards have 3 minutes.

Also, this is not a Gameplay bug.

My bad about the ward times but it only adds more reason to delay spectator mode.

...and where else would I have put this thread?

Okay, I just visited the DoTA2 Spectator forum and it has a bug subcategory. My apologies once again. You would think it would be placed in the Bug Category o.O

Well, it'd go into Spectating -> Live Games.

And use [SUGGESTION] in title, not bug.

And 2 minutes is a long waiting time, and just because your friend told you "hey they put ward at spot X 2 minutes ago" doesn't mean the enemy haven't already benefited from it.

2 wards cost 200g, and a single hero kill will easily net more gold than that

2 minutes is also enough time for most ultimates to be able again, a lv 25 hero to die, respawn, and maybe die AGAIN
Every time someone make a false report.
Making people's losses feel worse with just my name (don't ask me how it work, I certainly don't)

Currently observed Orb(Unique Attack Modifiers), Critical, and Bash interactions for DotA2

          To:
People who cry MM isn't fair: Maybe you're not as great as you make yourself to be.
People who wants surrender: It exists, but I'm not teaching you how to do it.

Longer delay requires more memory usage as well since the server has to buffer it all to delay it.

Two minutes was chosen as a good trade off between memory usage, game play impact and some of the impact of the temporal delay. I've seen players finish a game, then join it as a spectator to watch the last two minutes of their own game. Also its already a bit strange when a friend is watching a game and sends you a message, "great play" and you have to realize he's talking about what happened two minutes ago.

You may have also noticed in the Watch Games list you can see a game that says "Starts in 2:00" which means the streaming doesn't start for two minutes. I put this in because if you join as a spectator before the delay time, you get a blank screen until the delayed feed starts broadcasting.

I would agree that six minutes is ideal precisely for game play reasons (ward duration), but it causes some weird temporal issues with the social aspect of the game.

I completely agree with this, I don't think there will be enough people aiming to ruin games by ghosting ward spots to call for an entire 6 minute delay.

Had to bumped this thread. I also encounter this kind of situation. I played with a team that have their friends spectating the game from their place. I don't want to blame them but it makes you wonder if they would cheat by using this method (I mean by telling their friends where the wards are).

My suggestion is to make an option where you can limit spectators to view one side only or disable them from seeing wards.

Wondering is that reason why you still didn't added Teachies,he will requires a lot of delay in spectate mode.

Edit: Mby even spec mode shouldn't be allowed when Techies be in-game.

                  Will see...

Lol. That's exactly what I've been thinking, techies is going to be a logistical nightmare for Valve.

                        - you can only spectate a game if you have a friend in that game (must be friend before game starts).
                        - This spectate will be limited to friend's team view (like coach) and will be live (10s?).
                        - Edge case is having friends in both team. Doesn't really matter what happens in this case.
                        - Another edge case is friends of friends...you know, when you click watch game on someone who is spectating already.

Anyways, this will free up huge amount of memory.
                        - use all that resources for all games in live tab to set delay to 10 min.

This got recognition on Reddit so hopefully Valve takes notice and implements a solution.
