  • DotA2 - Watching Replays

    Hello,

I've been working with and following StarCraft 2 for the past couple of years. I've played thousands of games, watched hundreds of replays and spent well over a thousand hours watching streams. I've witnessed casts being out-of-sync due to replaycasts. I've encountered problems watching replays with my friends because they'd get out-of-sync. These things have been somewhat bad experiences.

Now some of you might just say that if you start the replays at the same time, they will be in sync. That is, as unfortunate as it is, not true. I imagine, it has something to do with framerate, spikes and your PC specs, but not enitrely sure what actually causes it. But over the course of a 10 minute replay, it's not uncommon that people will get up to 15 seconds out of sync and that just makes it unbearable to listen to a cast that is done by replays. Now StarCraft 2 has gotten to a point where people often cast together from a live-setting and can look at the same computer. If that isn't the case, then R1CH from TeamLiquid.net has developed a replay synchronization tool that would help you stay in tact with your fellow caster/watcher. These things have definitely made things doable in StarCraft 2, but it's far from ideal that you need a third party program to be able to watch a replay together.

You might be asking yourself what this have to do with DotA? Well.. DotA is getting bigger and bigger and before we reach a point where this would become a problem, I'd like to suggest that you, Valve put time into considering and developing a replay-system that is similar to your "Lobbies". A custom-game system that would allow you to create a game and invite your friends to watch, where it'd show the replay, possibly with a "leader of the replay" that would control the gamespeed, pauses and similar spectating tools. Obviously you should still be allowed to use your camera freely, but having this thing would definitely solve a lot of problems in terms of synchronization, and would help casting from replays and just watching games with your friends a lot.

If you guys have any additions or corrections, feel free to discuss it both here and on TeamLiquid.net's DotA2 forum.

    Thank you,

Sup Bumblebonjwa? Not much to say, we definitely need this to make replay casting as well as coaching by replays possible.

Make it possible for people on two sides of the world to watch the same Replay by making it a Lobby Choice. Type in Game ID, download Replay and watch it together. Game should sync up between the two.

This is a great idea! It's also good for teams that are willing to watch competitive replays together to learn. This will greatly increase the community skill level and therefore the competitive scene.

If I remember correctly, Valve themself said that this feature is going to be implemented. They announced it like 6 months ago, but I guess it's not of highest priority, so it will be implemented later.

Q: Will the replay system allow me to move freely backwards and forwards in time rather than having to watch a whole replay? (by Luciando)

A: You’ll be able to jump around to any point in the replay, add bookmarks for easy referencing, view detailed stats and graphs while the game is going, and watch through a specific player’s view (with regards to their camera movement). You’ll also be able to watch replays with friends if you want to review a game or learn from your mistakes. To aid videomakers, the replay system will have flexible camera angle and speed controls. There will also be a bunch of commentating and editing features you can add to your replays.
