  • 7.00 HUD: An Open Letter

    Dear DotA 2 Development Team,

I would rather live in a world of abundant art than one where it barely exists at all. When it comes to minimalism the act of pretending like less is more is disingenuous at best and at its worst demands uniformity where there is diversity. That’s not to say the idea doesn’t hold its merits. Consuming less in a world of finite resources is a noble goal. That being said HUD Skins and HUD space hardly qualify as a resource.

Minimalism has its uses but these changes look and feel more like another victim of the cult of less. DotA wasn’t built solely on the idea of minimalism. DotA was built on the idea that we as players get to decide what means more to them and consequently what means less. I’ve seen that idea behind almost every hero, mechanic, UI, and map along with a list too extensive to include in this quickly posted open letter.

In what will be my only request, I’m asking perhaps even begging you as a long time player of this game for over a decade, let us have a choice once more. Not the illusion of it that was haphazardly thrown down from the altar of the cult of less. This short letter will go onto reddit where it will likely be eviscerated in a flurry of downvotes but I don’t care about that. I care about this game. I care about the design implications of pursuing minimalism. Because I know it won’t stop at the UI. Wishing you the best of fortune in leading this New Journey.

I only have the audacity to hope that I can follow.

    With Good Intentions,
