+1 would be nice to have such an option, people who don't like the indicators should be able to turn them off
    Prepare for unforeseen consequences.

Only on mouse-over to check it out outside of combat, else it is a no-go for me.

i don't see why this should be a problem... i'd like to have at least that range circle of the skill when i chose it, sure you can look at your cursor and see if the enemy is in the range of the spell but in the heat of the fight i often lose track of the cursor and an optional circle would be very nice
also, this wouldn't affect the skill of the gamer, it would just be a nice optional feature to have...
the same applies to the aoe shapes... for me, some of the shapes (the spell itself, when u cast it) aren't clearly visible because of the perspective and the visualization (the slight transparency/bloom/etc. of some visual effects), so, why not?!
skill range and shape (not that necessary) visualization as an option ftw

i have mixed feelings about this

but show AoE while hovering is great.
not so much for skill based targeting methods, this includes dual breath

On the other hand I don't really see any harm in it either for the veterans, its not like the spell in gonna cast itself if someone comes into range. If it is such a big deal, just add an option to turn AoE indicators off.

The problem is that there are a lot of WC3 DOTA players who have played the game for years. They think that they're only people on earth that should play DOTA 2 and don't understand that Valve is making DOTA 2 in order to please both the existing community and to also invite a new generation of DOTA players. So, they assume that since they've played the game for years that every change to DOTA 2 is totally geared around them. Their selfish, ignorant, and elitest mentality is what ruins most games for newcomers. They think that their skill and knowledge of the game came over night, but in fact, it probably took them weeks/months to get to the level they're at and forget about that and insist that all new players be at their equal skill level the first time they start up the game. So if it's a feature they consider for themselves as unnecessary, then they deem it unnecessary to the entire community and that everyone that doesn't understand something at the level they do, they must just be worthless and not allowed to play the game.

People that have years of experience and consider themselves pro need to learn how to contribute and take in account that there are THOUSANDS of new players coming into the DOTA/MOBA scene and that they would like to play the game at the same level, but will just be bombarded with insults about how they are newbs, suck with skills, etc. etc. ALL for the basic reason that the same jerks that are spamming insults are also denying new players learning abilities. Basically, they need to get over themselves, pull the stick out of their asses, and realize that this is a video game and that they're not God's gifts to humanity just because they know how to play this game better than other people.

                  /rant

On that note, I think a spell shape would be ok, but ONLY on mouse over. It would just be there to give a quick glance at the AOE of the spell, after that, once you go to cast, you need to just have the cursor X, like how skills are presented currently.

How if we add max cast range circle, and draw the AOE from hero circle to cast range circle?

Maybe my picture will explain it better

Having only played Dota 1/2 I can say I wouldn't mind this (as an option).
VALVE please make a punishment system that punishes the offenders... not the team. Also ever heard about communication? Try it. It might solve a lot of debates/questions here on the forum.

                          More information = less skill
If you had that feature, people will request to have ALL skill have an AoE and cast range.

This is not an issue of "what if theres new players and he has to learn the AoEs of 100 skills?".
First off, if the player wants to invest in a highly competitive game, then its his duty to understand the mechanics,
as much as i hate saying this, this game isnt for casuals, valve went into developing DotA2 with the knowledge
that they wont care for casuals because the playerbase they will get is the old players of DotA1 and
maybe throw a couple of tutorials before throwing the new players into the fire.

Please stop trying to change the game to a babyfied version of it, theres the other games for that,
whats more annoying is that i just came from a thread requesting to have skill casting range be always active.

Think before you suggest. Even a single tree placement on the map would break a few things.
Weigh the pros and cons of your suggestions. Dont just throw shit at the wall and expect it to stick.

this pretty much, making stuff easier to understand for beginners is VERY IMPORTANT!!! this wont effect anyone that already knows the spells, it will simply make it easier to understand the hitbox of the spell for new players.

No. Learn to play the game yourself without a bunch of assists.

In the future tutorial mode, sure.
