  • Feedback on the new UI

    For those of you who may not have seen the new HUD:


    To start off, let me say, this HUD is most certainly an improvement over the old one (especially for those of us with widescreens). A lot of the suggestions I made have made it in, including the improved colors at the top, as well as the overall compacting of elements, especially the hero portrait.

    What I like:
    • Improved Stats - Seeing Armor, Movement Speed, and Attack Damage at a glance is nice, though they should be more unified, with either the number appearing below the picture always or on top of it.
    • Hero Portrait - Narrower, and takes up less space. If it were up to me I would remove it completely, but alas, it is not so.
    • Level Up Bar - Doesn't take up 30% of the screen anymore, right in the middle area of your screen.
    • Easier Visibility of Glyph of Fortification - Great for a glance, you don't need to hover over it to estimate anymore.
    • Clearer Color bars at the top - Self Explanatory.


    What I don't like:
    • Improved Stats - I don't think that the Strength, Agility, and Intelligence needs to be so large and spaced out, more wasted space IMO.
    • The Bottom Right - K/D/A and LH/D should be at the top right, as before, as of now that area is wasted completely. This would allow the Quick Buy and Courier areas to be pushed further down, allowing that area to be at the same height as the items panel.
    • The Health/Mana Bars - Although they would be nice if they were centered, I don't think it's as big of a deal as other people are making it out to be.


    The empty panels to the left of the Items panel and the hero portrait only exist in widescreen mode, so nothing can be put there (I wish they were removable though), but that's at least a lot better than before.

    I love the direction they're taking the HUD in, although I still feel that there is lots of room for improvement. From what I understand, those empty panels can't actually be completely removed because the ground under them isn't actually rendered. One of the first lessons in GUI development is the scalability to a user's experience, so I hope that eventually, we will have as much customization as TF2. Specifically, I would want to move the minimap to the right (away from the flow of clicks and the map, yes I know the console command), remove the hero portrait, and compress the spells down even further to just basic mana, CD, and rank information.

    I trust in you, VALVe, I know if anything, you can make this game perfect.

    Hope you don't mind me popping my own feedback here.

    What I like:

    - Obviously set out Fortification button that is much further from the courier
    - Constantly visible Courier Status

    What I don't like:

    - Bottom bar "pops" out too much. I think it's too specular and shiny, it distracts a little from the flat, matte style of graphics. Whilst watching DotaTV I couldn't help but feel a little distracted by it. It's a really nice piece of art but is constantly jumping out at me. Would like if they kept the current style but toned down the contrast. Possibly make the highlights less obvious, make the entire surface more matte looking.

    - Stats section. I quite like the move speed stat, but the other stats look like they could use a little more work. Also felt the previous graphic style for the stats section was nicer in being more minimalistic and stylish.

      Along with the return of K/D/A to the top right, I'd also like to see that Fortification button smaller. It's just to massive now and not very pleasing aesthetically.

            Personally, I like the idea behind the UI, which is that data you want to see at a glance (MS, Armor, etc) is there, but that it just looks bad. I just feel like the information was shoehorned in there and that they UI was pushed out too fast. Maybe I am just a stick in the mud and dislike the change, but a lot of the changes I am on the fence about, or plain dislike. The Kills / CS moving comes to mind.

              @ snowstorm: there will be a point where you get used to that shiny "art".. and at that point your brain will choose to ignore it just it is choosing to ignore the nose.. your eyes actually sees it all the time but the brain chooses to ignore it..

                  The new interface is more readable but however there are still some points to improve. The screens with the informations like the Heroes Stats for example are still difficult to read. The font is very small. You shoud increase the size of the font and of the table of informations at the left-top.

                  An other small detail, the damages of the heroe + the stats damages of main attribute aren't added. It should be better if It was.
