  • Why NOT to remove the plain unused sections in the HUD

People complain about the little bits of HUD that have nothing on them in every post, but for me I would prefer the straight bars obscuring vision. Besides being more fair for people with tiny screens (they won't have any HUD to remove), there is another big reason. With parts of the HUD on the bottom uncovered you would have to maneuver your screen so that the open bits of HUD are in spots that the enemy are likely to appear from, adding quite a bit of unnecessary hassle to the game.

I think they can eventually find information to put in these sections, much like the courier display that was recently added. This is just my two cents.

Many casters use that space to put in their PIP and website info. It's a good spot for those types of things. Look at a joindota cast to see what I mean:

Please read Common Discussions, Common Suggestions, Common Technical Issues, Common Bugs, and do a website search prior to making any new thread.

slowreflex i see what youre saying but alot of players like that area to not be there, or to atleast have an option to remove it like in league of legends (which i hate to make comparisons with) but nevertheless i agree with philo king

By leaving the interstitial spaces filled in with UI components, they avoid having to render the game in that area of the screen. Depending on how their graphics pipeline is set up, this should be increasing game performance by 10-20%.

The more that shows, the more that the game renders, the camera fov would be changed, etc. etc.

That "dead space" is because of Widescreen monitors, and because widescreen is not today's standard, you have to accommodate for everyone.

Even with the recent patch of removing the dead space, Valve treated us 16:9 users to using up that space, of which they did well. If everyone was playing on a 4:3 resolution, no one would be complaining. People need to stop getting their knickers in bunches and wait until 2020 where a 4:3 resolution is obsolete and angering the "late" audience.

Because not having that space would give an unfair advantage to players who use a widescreen aspect ratio over an older 4:3 ratio. If you notice the 4:3 ratio HUD has almost 0 negative space.

Better to take away the empty bars, than having advertisements there.
