  • [I'm making a note here] New HUD & General concept

The first time I saw DOTA2 was trough The International's stream, and I was like: Damn!

I was used to HoN, Dota, LoL, RoI... HUDs and this one was so great, supperior and groundbreaking! So wide, so clear, so few stuff on the screen yet so damn awesome and compelte... Also, centering the text on the screen, using that kind of font, was the straw that broke the camel; That minimalistic concept was art for my eyes, and I bet for everyone else's eyes too.

Now, regarding the present, even though some of this stuff is awesome (like the current courier display, some of the new item icons...), a fact that I realized is that you are kind of starting to overload the whole concept with, occasionally, unnecessary details which do worse than better (IMO), kind of baroque.

This sometimes happens to me, as well as many of us when we are trying to evolve/develop/enhance an idea which is in our everyday's minds/papers, and has been there for a long already.
I suggest you to have a look to the first DOTA2 images and replays, so as to get fresh new ideas, as if you could roll it all back, keeping the whole experience. It certainly works. Have you ever crushed a drawing paper instead of just rubbing off some of the stuff you didn't like on it? This is kinda the same; just forget about "all the stuff made so far" for some days and then have a look to the old ideas/concepts, I bet you will get some great, new and fresh inspirations.

The overlay/display of the stats, the too big and overloaded HUD, the now uncentered text... Even the "polished and bright rock HUD" is actually amazing and a great job, I somehow think that it won't fit.

I don't know, just trying to help out since I have the feeling that the DOTA team is "too focused on X" or has become a little bit closed minded, maybe because you got your necks pushed by the big shot's strong finger a.k.a noisy community/whatsoever, by judging the points/paths/ideas which DOTA2 wanted to take, and how it currently is. (Heads up: I'm not pretending to say it's bad or whatever, this is just an afterthought).

    +1 for OP

I definitely know what you mean. I had stopped playing Dota as my friends migrated to HoN or stopped playing this genre all together. I didn't even want to try HoN after watching one game cause the game looked like a mess to me. My first encounter of the Dota 2 interface was watching The International and I instantly loved it. It was simple. (though it is reminense of WC3 interface).

I finally got my hands on a copy and my eyes were in for a terrible surprise. Could we in the games full release to have the option to have the simpler (retro) interface? I honestly would buy it as an interface cosmetic improvement (skin) if it was priced reasonable. The current interface distracts me from what i really need to know.

+1 for OP.. but I do have hope in Valve that they will find a way to make all of us happy.. and like they said the HUD is work in progress is not a done deal yet.. it will be improved.

-1 for OP, if I want to play a minimalistic looking game I'll play 8-bit Mario. I just want an astonishing 2012 game, which it is slowly heading to.
