  • [Suggestion] Toggleable (better) Camera Lock

I believe this qualifies under HUD, if not I will move as necessary.

I know camera lock exists to a lesser extent with double clicking your portrait or clicking the mouse over it then dragging away, what I suggest is the ability to bind a key to toggle a locked camera as well as an improved camera lock that follows the character better.

Well I know a lot of people can and like to play with the ability to scroll without a locked camera, it doesn't hinder me much playing like this, but the convenience would be immeasurable especially during team fights or chaotic moments since it will help you keep track easier and not have to worry about the camera accidentally jolting off your fight.

How about a little old thing called map awareness? I really dont want to dive into this argument again, just wanted to give you some food for thought.

I concur. Not having the option in the way described is off putting to me as a player. If this option were available I would play a lot more and enjoy it so much more. On top of this if I might add maybe either adding a littler more zoom out to the camera or center the hero's better.

I fail to see how map awareness has anything to do with the option to toggle camera lock? It is a matter of personal preference.

Just double tap and hold the key bound to your hero.

It's not that hard, and it's more flexible.

That sacrifices one of your fingers though.

Imo, screen locking is just a bad function just as much as controlling your screen properly is a skill (like last-hitting) that needs to be mastered. Screen locking forces your viewing window to as big as your viewing window is currently, which is problematic when you need to scout ahead, or navigate around a teamfight to isolate the biggest threat and so forth. Like many other skill-based non-intuitive options, like mana not being included in the healthbar GUI, I believe that screen locking should not be put in.

I don't see why so many people are against it, when it could be better for some people. It is not like you have to use it if they did implement it. It really would be a nice feature if bindable to a key so you can just as easily unlock it, it wouldn't detriment you in
              anyway.

You don't seem to have a valid argument here. Everyone develop their own way to play and utilize such things. So again it is a matter of personal preference. Just cause people don't play the way you do does not make them any less better than you. The mastered their own way of doing it.. all that is being asked is to be given the option to do so. You do not have to use it if they not implement it. Should not matter to you or hinder your playing performance if you claimed such a feat of mastering it.

Agree with this, I've only played Dota 2 and have developed the screen-moving skill but I can see, particularly for new players, how locking on the hero might help. I don't understand why some are denigrating the suggestion as carebear or whatever, it's up to them how they want to play and be most effective. After time they may find it too restrictive and move on to free camera and if not, all the more power to them.

Perhaps not for me to say, but I dont think this is a significant amount of work for implementation.

This has literally nothing to do with map awareness.

Anyways I've been pitching this for a long time, you can set up a little config macro to have a key double tap F1, but the problem with that is it deselects all other units than your hero, which is a problem for micro and illusion heroes. I think all we need is a holdable "follow selected unit" keybind to do exactly what clicking and holding the portrait does. It shouldn't be hard to implement since the code is already there in that function, and I'm sure it'd help LoL and HoN players transition easier, which means more monies for Valve.

I'd also love to see more rigid camera following, the directed smoothing is nice for spectating games but when you're actually playing I'd much rather have it consistently snap to whatever unit the camera is chasing. It makes the game feel much more rigid and responsive.

Oh that's lovely, thank you. I had no idea that bind existed, it does both of thethings I've wanted it to.
If anyone wants it to be a hold rather than a toggle in LoL or HoN fashion, throw this in your autoexec:

                        Code:
                        alias "+camhold" "dota_camera_lock 1"
                        alias "-camhold" "dota_camera_lock 0"
                        bind SPACE "+camhold"
