  • [Suggestion] Making Dota 2 a lot easier to get into for newcomers

    Hi there,

I feel a little ashamed to say that I came from League of Legends to Dota 2, but I really fell in love with Dota since I'm in the beta and I wanna bring in some ideas I came up with that would make this game a lot more comfortabel to get into without affecting the real skill-play negatively.

I think the most important feature of League of Legends for new players was the clearly visible range indicator on every single spell. Sure you can learn the ranges by playing a lot, but having range indicators assures an easier start for every newcomer. I think it can be really frustrating when newbies are never sure of when an own spell or a hostile one could actually hit. So my suggestion is incorporating a range indicator thats slowly fades away with every game you do with a specific hero until it completely dissapears after 10 games or so. That would help new players a lot and would't bother veteran players since it's only an aid at the very beginning - also there should be an option to deactivate this completely if you wish not to have this aid. I've made up some images for you to better understand what I mean:

Since there will be a huge load of individual stats for every player you could somehow link the opacity of the range indicator to the number of games played with a hero. I suppose it wouldn't be too hard to build in code-wise.

Another suggestion would be a lasthit aid with similar behaviour. Just only at the beginning of your Dota career you should be able to enable a lasthit/deny aid on either the creep itself or its healthbar like this:

I don't think this one is as important as the range indicator one, but I just wanted to mention it too
Thank you for your patience guys! I hope I could help there.

    Best regards,
    Shixxor.

Seems like a slippery slope and I'm usually all for helping new players.

It just seems like they'd ask for something like that to be permanent.

Last hit assistance should only be available in practice mode versus bots.

The rest I think should be an option for players, despite whether it lowers the skill.

        That sounds great.

Well, it's making the game noob friendly, it isn't going to make you beat a better player on your lane.

Raising the skill floor in a game is never a bad thing, bad players will still get arcane boots on anti-mage no matter whether the game tells them this is a horrendous idea or not.

Since there will be Tutorials anyways, I don't think adding the lasthit-helper to the practice games will make the game noob friendly.
Ofcourse you have to be able to enable/disable it.

Is not a bad idea, you could disable it if you dont want it

I dont like this idea, everyone is newbie from start and they need to learn how to play. Making the game easyer is not solution.

I would only agree to this in custom matches (have a "helper" rule), bot matches, low rank matches, and maybe if you are being coached.

I've already made a thread about last hit HP bar color change, so i'm all for it.

Range indicators would be nice. I disliked them a lot when they first put them in LoL, but after a while I really came to appreciate them.

I actually disagree with the last hit glow thing.

Because taking into account your reaction time and hero's animation, chances are if you just wait for that glow to appear, your creep will probably kill the enemy creep before you can land your attack (especially when at low level, where heroes usually don't have more than 50-60 damage at most, not counting QB bonus)

And the range indicator should either simply be an option for all mode, or a forced option for non-MM mode in my opinion, since people who like the indicator will want to keep it on all the time rather than for the first X games with that hero.
Every time someone make a false report.
Making people's losses feel worse with just my name (don't ask me how it work, I certainly don't)

Currently observed Orb(Unique Attack Modifiers), Critical, and Bash interactions for DotA2

                        To:
People who cry MM isn't fair: Maybe you're not as great as you make yourself to be.
People who wants surrender: It exists, but I'm not teaching you how to do it.

well I suggested the X times with a particular hero so that all players are will be on the same circumstances after a few games, i think playing dota without range idicators like the original is good and skillful, just to make it easier to get into the game i'd like to have them just in the beginning to get used to the ranges. a custom mode with permanent range indicators in practice games would be nice tho.
