This isn't Half-Life, it's DOTA. That "X <icon> Y" thing was a HL (then later CS) thing. It has no place here, sorry

I bet you are still using a text based Operating System because windows are for suckers....

The alternative at the moment is reading cryptic chat lines (made even cryptic by strange player names) just to see what happened.

Is it not easier to make an OPTION to display this info graphically?

Where to put that some of this stuff is supported already by hero voices.

Since when is X got pwned by Y for Z gold cryptic ? It means Y killed X and got Z gold... nothing astronomical or rocket-sciencey about it.
The chat box is separate and in the center of the screen, with an included history to see if you missed anything. They are both close together so you can see the action AND read it, unlike a chat on the left (top or bottom), a kill list (with an icon that you must actually guess what weapon it is) to the right (most likely top) and the action going around the center while your distracted from the text all over the place... What exactly is the problem in that ? It's as simple and straight-forward as can be.

P.S. I think you mean command line-based operating systems, not text-based... text-based is just Notepad or Edit (for those of you who lived in the DOS era... ahhhh those were the days when a game wouldn't start without dos4gw.exe in its directory [no such thing as a folder :P])

              This

Edit: Also, a copy/paste from the other identical thread

I don't hate the idea, but I'm not a big fan either. We have notifications for the important things, runes, dust/gem/etc, kills. Any more would seem too cluttered to me. What do others think?

I'd just like it to be more apparent which team killed which, rather than simply display hero and player names.

I am <100 games in dota 2 and I find it very, very hard to keep track of who killed who in that wall of text. As i've said before, lots of text, lots of strange player names, lots of kill streaks.

2 icons is just 100% straighforward

If you don't know the heroes' names, you aren't going to know their icons which could be more easily confused.

If you don't know who is on your team (players names), during kills/ buying gem/dust, etc. the hero's name is listed in parenthesis. If you don't immediately know what heroes are on your team, you don't have the right to be suggesting changes to Dota, yet. Once you become more experienced, it'll be more clear.

Also, the colors give it away. Bright, happy colors are radiant. Duller colors are dire.

Why is this forum full of wizeguys nobody heard of and seem to know the game in and out? And they all seem to like the limitations DotA 1 had.

It is suggested as an OPTION. So why does this bother you? It bothers me since I was used to this from playing HoN for 2 years, but you?

DotA has such a steep learning curve that any small thing can help. And for me this is one of them.

(Surprised or not in HoN I was in the upper middle of the player base, and I almost never care about the color of players and I certainly do not care about player names. So imagine the troubles the rest of 50% have. All this is intended to make our lives easier).

I rarely care who killed who in a game. True, I am a support, but still. If I want to know, I either look at the replay OR check the scores. If I don't die (which I usually do especially when playing Dazzle or Chen since they focus me first) my assists increase. This is all fun and neat, but who cares ? The only score that matters is the one on top and the only result that matters is which team (since you can have a lower score than the opposing team but still win).
If you're in a teamfight you don't have time to look at who kills, who suicided or who assisted. You need to see which enemy to focus and which ally to protect. That is all.

Honestly, if you find X pwned Y for Z gold cryptic, using 3 icons (or whatever) to determine kill events is even more cryptic since they'd have to be small; same for a text. It feels even more distracting. And yeah, while it was new 13 years ago, I actually hated this way of showing kills in Half Life. But yeah it's my opinion just like you have yours. It's not that there are "wizeguys" on this forum, we are not trying to convince you that you are wrong, we just feel it's fine the way it is. If a designer finds it is a good idea they'll implement it. Simple as that.

You do not have to force it and go as far from DotA2 as Halflife or the like. You just need to look in your moba back yard and see that HoN has it and everyone was happy with it.

Why force the counterstrike system into this?

We have all that information, just presented even better: "Nightstalker picked up a Haste rune"

And don't come with your "It's just an option". Why dumb down the information to mere pictures as an option?

It seems to me that "making it an option" is the excuse for implementing every next guys request. And all ciritque is shouted down with "It's just an option, why be against it?"

Actually it's not a limitation, it's an improvement. You come and tell us we are wizeguys that hate change, while the sole reason you want this is that you are used to it from HoN and are unwilling to adapt yourself?

It is not unwillingness to adapt from my part. It is called evolution. DotA 2 took a lot of stuff HoN already pioneered, put it in the beta and now all of a sudden some are jumpy about requesting a new feature.

For your poor choice of example: "Nightstalker picked up a Haste rune".... You realize Valve added custom sounds for when NH picks a haste rune so that we do not have to read chat for that? Why not open a thread for them to remove this feature? Where to put it is not even an optional!?
