  • Guide: How to remap keys for steam games on mac OSX (including DOTA2)

    I spent some time figuring out how to do this, so thought I'd share it here.
    What I wanted to do was remap the LEFT COMMAND key to the LEFT ALT key, so i could use it for items abilities (CMD/ALT+Q, CMD/ALT+W etc.)
    Well here's how I did it:

    1. Download Karabiner

    2. Install it, and follow the instructions on how to add your own settings to the private.xml.

    Now replace the contents of private.xml with the following in order to remap the L_CMD key to L_ALT key ONLY while running steam games:

    <?xml version="1.0"?>
        <name>CMD to ALT for dota2</name>
    Go back to the "Change Key" tab as specified in the documentation for private.xml above, and select "Reload XML".
    Now search for "dota2" and check the "CMD to ALT for dota" in the remapping list. This will enable it while Karabiner is running.

    I did this but it's quite unreliable, only works sometimes on some launches. There is an open issue on this on the Karabiner Github repo:
