I don't remember ever getting a crash when another program takes focus. This being said, have you tried changing dota's display mode (settings -> video tab) ? I found windowed borderless to be the most convenient though if you have a compositing WM real fullscreen may have better perfs.

Yeah, it works.. but it force me to stay in 1440x900 instead of 720p (otherwise i just see a small window with the game) and my gpu can't deal with it

If the framerate drop is very important, part of it may be due to desktop composition. If you're using KDE, kwin has a default shortcut of alt+shift+F12 that disables composition. I don't really know about gnome shell.

The larger issue remains the crashes when using fullscreen. The fact you're doing resolution switching makes me suspect your GPU drivers. I'm not sure how up to date debian stable is these days. Could you give us the result from steam main window -> help menu -> System Information entry ?

Sorry, I missed your previous post with the system specs. The 304.xx line is a bit old (more than one year), but I wouldn't bet that alone would explain the crashes. Still, it seems geforce8 hardware is the oldest that isn't in legacy support, so nothing should stop you from trying out the 310 or 319 drivers (I believe 325 is still beta).

For clarification : You still get the crashes on xfce, right ? Do you still get crashes if you run dota in fullscreen with your monitor's desktop resolution ? Do you crash 100% of the time on an alt-tab when running in fullscreen ? Do you get crashes at map load when playing a bot game, lobby game, or queue for matchmaking while moving your mouse so the screensaver doesn't come up ?
