+1 I support by having only friends who own Dota 2 to be in the friend list!

In addition, it would be nice to be able to "minimize" the online and offline groups, for example:

    ------------------
    + Online (3/7)
    Andrex
    Plasma
    ZeroKontrol

    - Offline (4/7)
    ------------------

If you wish to chat with your friends who do not own Dota 2 you will simple alt+tab, you can not really contact them in any other quick and easy way when you are in a game playing.

+1, it was like this for portal 2 as well, and was annoying haha.

We need an option to set friendlist options (or sorting options at least).

    Possibilities:
    1. Show friends who own/play DotA2 first.
    2. Hide friends who don't own/play DotA2.
    3. Sort by name, no matter if they own DotA2 or not.
    4. Show online friends only (separate option, no matter if option #1 or #2 is selected or not)

THis suggestion is a must have

If you wanna see friends not in DOTA2, you can easly use CTRL+shift (steam friends tabs), so its not needed to see them in game.*

Would be better with "no friends from steam" and just something like.

    A dota2 only, friends list.

    /Friends add <name> (/f a <name>)
    /friends remove <name> (/f r <name>)
    /friends list show (/f l)
    /friends message -> send message to whole friends list (/f m <text>

As i said, dota2 work ONLY if you have steam, steam have got a "community in-game" service so DOTA do not need to import friends list from steam.

+1 for keranov's solution. I like knowing who is online in general but it would be nice for a second dota list.

It's nice, now they have the Playing Dota, Online, and Offline list, though I would just like if the entire lists didn't even have my friends who didn't own DotA2 in the first place. It makes no sense for them to be on the list if I can't invite them or anything...

Is it kept there so you can message people? That's what the steam overlay is for..
