Has anyone run across this before? Do I need to download a specific asset or something?

it's still in testing phase, so you can't hope like in windows. go read their github about issue in linux/osx here: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Dota-2
BAD person is someone who only think that he/she is a pro and others are noob and then blame the Matchmaking challenge.
GOOD person is someone who accept the Matchmaking challenge and succeeded getting a teamwork in his/her team

If the game only needs a graphics card that supports OpenGL 2.1 I wonder why the Intel HD4000 wasn't listed as supported in Zoid's system requirements post? From what I read online the HD4000 supports Open GL up to version 3.1 on Linux.

It's probably not listed because those are minimun requirements.

temp fix from gitrhub is to replace steam link "/usr/bin/steam %U" with "env MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=2.1 /usr/bin/steam %U"
